Chapter 3: Introduction to Second Life


Now that you have all of the accounts and access you need, and understand basic university policies and office procedures, it's time to begin learning about the virtual world of Second Life. Second Life is a platform and a technology that we use to develop educational content in 3D, including models and prototypes, sets for roleplaying and simulations, and much more. But Second Life is more than just a platform: it's also a place, a world, a culture, with millions of residents from around the real world. In fact, over 70% of the "residents" in Second Life are not based in the US, but come from other nations around the globe.

This chapter is designed to give you an introduction to Second Life and help you discover the basic skills you need to interact with the virtual environment and its residents. (Be sure to complete the sections in order since later sections will refer to material covered earlier.)

Initially, the user interface an be overwhelming and you may find it difficult to understand the lingo and jargon used by Second Life residents. Don't worry! By the end of this chapter you will have a better understanding of the Second Life culture and how to navigate this complex virtual space.
